1. Start with our VWT course
Option One: Complete the full CALA Foundations of Vertical Water Training - 20 hours.
Option Two: Complete the Letter of Acceptance to Bypass the CALA Foundations of Vertical Water Training. Fitness theory knowledge, leadership experience and a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology are essential to bypass the course. Examples would be medical professionals and those working in personal training. Connect with us to explore bypassing the VWT.

2. What to Expect In the VWT
A combination of land and water 'activity-based' sessions are complimented with applied theoretical sessions. Expect to be transformed as a leader… and inspired to spread the joy of movement in water!
Course Content Includes:
+ CALA Philosophy
+ Aqua Physics: Magical Properties of Water Body
+ Alignment: Power Posture Training Principles
+ Class Format and Class Design
+ CALA Movement Bank in Chest Deep & Deep Water
+ Instructor and Participant Safety
+ Communication: Verbal and Visual Cueing
+ Applied Anatomy Physiology
+ Effects of Immersion on the Body Systems. -
3. VWT Certification
Certification usually occurs several weeks after the course, although course participants have the option of completing certification immediately following the course. Certification must be completed within one year of taking the course.
Certification includes writing the VWT Theory Exam. 90 minutes are allotted to write the VWT theory exam which comprises 50 multiple choice questions. This is an 'open book' theory exam. The pass mark is 80%.
Congrats! You have now passed the VWT. -
4. Complete a Specialization
Upon completion of the VWT, choose one or more of the following courses to be employment ready in the workplace:
+ Group Aqua Fitness (GAF)
+ Healing Waters: Aquatic Post Rehabilitation: Aqua Arthritis and Joint Disorders (HW:AA)
+ HydroRider (HR)
+ Aqua Kick Box (AKB) -
5. Practical Assignment
Attend an in-person or online course. Upon completion of the course, complete the practical assignment or mock class plan by submitting a 30 minute ‘class’ plan using the assignment template.
The practical assignment is submitted (via email to an approved CALA assessor) a minimum of two weeks before the practical assessment. -
6. Practical Assessment
The submission of a 30 minute practical assessment/mock class video is your final step to becoming certified. You may also have this assessed in person, if available in your region. A minimum of two participants must participate in the 30 minute ‘class’.
The practical assessment does not need to mirror the practical assignment.
A CALA assessor will grade your work and provide you feedback. Pass mark is 80%.Congrats! You are now fully certified!

7. Stay Current with Continuing Education
Every year CALA requires you to take 8 CEC or continuing education credits to maintain your full certification. This gives your employer confidence that your skills and training are current and up-to-date.
Workshops, webinars, clinics are available in-person and online for you to choose from.
